North Point Girls Capture State Basketball Title
The North Point Eagles girls basketball
team completed its perfect season with
a 62-56 win over Baltimore Polytechnic,
capturing the 4A state basketball
championship., Saturday at UMBC.
Tasia Butler led North Point with 24
points, 10 of those coming from the free
throw line.  Chalise Greenwood was the
only other Eagle who scored in double
figures with 11, KanDeon Niravanh
scored 9 and Kahlia Prather had 7
points to go along with 16 rebounds.

Following a thrilling come-from-behind
overtime victory in the state semifinals,
coach Mike Serpone's team looked like
it might breeze through the final.  The
Eagles (27-0) led by 20 points midway
through the third quarter but went
scoreless over the last two minutes of
the game to make things interesting.
The Engineers (22-6) outscored North
Point by nine points in the second half,
led by Teira Pendleton's game-high 25
points.
The Eagles became only the second Charles County
girls team to win a state title, La Plata won two
championships in 1977 and 1987.  SMAC girls teams
have now won 8 state championships, led by Calvert,
which captured its third consecutive 2A title earlier in the
day.
Calvert Girls Win Third Straight 2A Championship
The Calvert Cavaliers trailed Middletown by 11 points with 2:52 left in the first quarter.  But the
two-time defending state champions didn't panic.  Calvert cut the deficit to five by halftime and
outscored the Knights 17-7 in the third quarter to take hold of the 2A title game.  Alexis Smith scored
a team-high 18 points as the Cavaliers became just the eighth girls team to win 3 or more consecutive
championships.  The state record for consecutive titles is 5 held by Brooklyn Park and Eleanor
Roosevelt.  Smith finished her career with 1975 points to become the all-time leading scorer, boys or
girls, in Calvert County history.
Congratulations to Robyn Parks, North Point High
School, for scoring her 1000th point at VCU.
Parks is shown receiving a 1000th point game
ball following a Rams' home victory. Parks is
averaging a team-leading 22.8 points per game
for VCU which is off to a 10-1 start for only the
third time in program history and is currently
riding a school record tying nine-game winning
streak.
